The main secret to perfect wallpaper paste is a strict sequence of actions. A mistake during the mixing stage can lead to the formation of lumps, poor adhesion, or peeling of wallpaper strips.

1. Preparing the water and container Use only an absolutely clean plastic bucket. Residue from old paste, dust, or dirt will disrupt the chemical composition of the new mixture. The water must be strictly cold or at room temperature (no higher than 20–25 °C).

2. Creating a "funnel" Take a clean stirring stick (or a construction mixer on the lowest speed). Start stirring the water vigorously in a circular motion to create a deep funnel in the center.

3. Introducing the dry mix Without stopping the stirring, begin pouring the dry paste from the packet. This should be done in a thin stream (or by gently shaking the packet) right into the edge of the formed funnel, not into the very center.

4. Initial mixing and pause Mix the compound for 20–30 seconds until smooth. Then, you must let the paste rest. The swelling time depends on the manufacturer (usually from 3 to 10 minutes—the exact time is always indicated on the packaging). During this period, the modified starch and anti-fungal additives are activated.

5. Final mixing After the pause, the paste will become thick and jelly-like. Vigorously stir it one more time for 1–2 minutes. It is now completely ready to be applied to the wall (for non-woven wallpaper) or directly to the wallpaper strip.

• Lumps have formed: The most common problem. Occurs if the paste is poured too quickly or into stagnant water. Solution: Leave the paste for 10–15 minutes; sometimes the lumps dissolve on their own. If that does not help, pass the mixture through cheesecloth or a fine sieve. You cannot use paste with lumps, as they will be visible under the wallpaper.
• The paste is too thin: The water proportions were likely incorrect. Solution: You cannot simply add more dry powder to the ready mixture—this will 100% result in unbreakable lumps. You need to mix a small amount of very thick paste in a separate container and then combine both mixtures.
• The paste is too thick: This is easy to fix. Simply add a little cold water and mix thoroughly.
• Wallpaper is peeling at the edges (seams): The mixture is too thin, or the wall absorbs moisture too rapidly. For heavy non-woven wallpapers, the water proportion must always be lower (the mixture is made thicker) than for light paper wallpapers.

• Prime walls with a weak solution: Diluted in a thinner proportion (indicated on the package as "for priming"), the paste perfectly prepares the wall, evening out its absorbency.
• Store the ready solution: Mixed paste can be stored in a closed bucket at room temperature for up to 24 hours (recommended). To prevent a dry crust from forming on the surface, cover the bucket tightly with a lid or stretch plastic wrap over it.
• Use non-woven wallpaper paste for paper wallpapers: Non-woven paste is stronger and thicker. If you have leftovers, you can use it to hang paper wallpapers (applying it to the strip), but not vice versa.

• Use hot or warm water. In warm water, the starch instantly gelatinizes, and the paste will immediately turn into one solid lump that is impossible to stir.
• Add dry powder to the ready solution.
• Use dirty tools and buckets left over from paint or putty. The alkali from old building materials will neutralize the adhesive properties.
• Pour leftovers down the drain. Swollen paste can cause a serious blockage in the pipes. It is better to let the leftovers dry in a bag and dispose of them with regular household waste.
